How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are different pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. audi replacement keys So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated here by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector).
